XXL Olive Wood Chess Set

A very large chess set. This is a Spanish chess set made from olive wood.

The king measures 20.4 cm in height and the pawns 9 cm.

The board measures 60 x 60 cm, with 7.3 cm squares.

At this scale, the pieces resemble sculptures more than chess pieces.

Its creation required considerable work and a large quantity of wood. The pieces were turned and hand-carved before being painted.

The pieces have been well preserved, but unfortunately the board is in rather poor condition.

Colossal is the best word to describe this chess set. It is the heaviest set of pieces on this website. The set weighs 26 kilograms, and the king measures 19.5 cm with a base of 4.6 cm. The pieces are made of metal and feature beautiful silver and gold patinas. They were probably made by someone seeking to create the heaviest set in the world, or to turn chess games into weight training exercises.

The set replicates the Anne Carlton medieval animal chess set, and it was probably made using molds of the original pieces. It features anthropomorphic animals dressed in medieval attire. The king is represented by a lion and the queen by a lioness. The pieces are felted (thankfully). They are probably heavy enough to break down a door or knock someone out.

An exceptionally large set. The board measures 73 x 73 x 8 cm. The king is 27 cm tall. Sets of this size are very rare. This one was made in Indonesia, and the names of the pieces (king, bishops, queen, etc.) are written in Indonesian on the underside of the bases. The board and pieces are made of light wood. The pieces can be stored inside the board.

The pieces represent deities and mythological figures. The representations are a bit different from those usually found on most Indonesian sets, they have human features and bodies rather than animal or anthropomorphic ones. They were hand-painted with bright, golden colors. This game shows an alternative side of Indonesian chess art, having been designed in a very different way and using different methods than the country’s common games.

Another Lardy Club set size 10, this one in brown. The board is not original, but the photos of the set displayed on the board gives a good idea of the size of the pieces and their imposing aspect. The king measures 12.2 cm with a base of 5 cm and the pawns measure 6.4 cm. The pieces are felted and weighted, the king weighs 72 grams in this set.

A very large model, these are rare. This is a size 10 Chavet set, the king measures 12.2 cm high and weighs 66 grams. Its base measures 4.6 cm wide. The pawns are 6.5 cm high. The box measures 28 x 15 x 11 cm. The pieces are made of boxwood, they are weighted and felted. The knights have eyes, nostrils, ears, a mouth, and a mane. This set is not in very good condition; there are cracks and damage to the wood unfortunally
