Louis Vuitton Tyler model chess pieces. Designed in partnership with the artist Tyler, the Creator.

The pieces are made of beechwood and walnut, with a gold-tone metal disc beneath their bases.

The king measures 8.8 cm tall with a 3 cm base.

They feature a highly artistic and bold design, with an original and unique melted effect. Given that the pieces are made of wood, their design and manufacture must have been complex, and the result is visually striking.

This altuglas chess set was created in the 1970s by designer Michel Dumas, known for his works in glass and Plexiglas. It is a large set. The king is 13 cm tall and its base is 4.7 cm wide, the knights are 9.8 cm tall and the pawns are 5.4 cm tall. The material used for the pieces, Altuglas, is akin to a type of high-quality glass, but more opaque and dense. This material produces magnificent reflections and plays of light when placed in a well-lit room or exposed to sunlight.

The shape of the pieces, designed by the creator, are modernist, figurative, and very original. They perfectly match the properties inspired by the material used. The aim was to highlight the smooth, round, and sharp aspects of the glass and to play with the cut, superimposition, and opacity to create subtle interactions between the pieces and the light.

Tastefully designed by the Lanvin creators. The set comes with a box and a ribbon pouch to store the board. The pieces are made of 90% wood and 10% felt. The king measures 7.8 cm and the pawns 3.9 cm. The board measures 30 cm.

The pieces have been designed in a chic and modern fashion. They are cut in a Bauhaus style and dressed in elegant costumes with glamorous and playful facial expressions. The squares on the board are deliberately irregular. In addition to its aesthetic originality, the board also features a technical originality: the two parts are magnetized and a system of bearings allows them to be fixed at various degrees of offset, as illustrated in the series of photos. A plexiglass set with storage case. The case holds the pieces and also serves as a game board. This vintage set was designed in France by the Dapy brand in the 1980s. The case measures 44 x 35 x 7.5 cm. The king is 5.6 cm tall and the pawns are 3 cm tall.

The plexiglass of the set produces beautiful reflections and plays of light between the pieces and the transparent case. The modernist shape of the pieces corresponds to the now vintage aesthetic of plexiglass objects from the 1970s and 1980s. Despite its minimalist appearance, the harmony in the design between the case and the pieces, its great functionality, and the optimization of its space, as well as the intermingling of tones, shapes, and reflections, the play with opacity and perspective reveal a great deal of research and inventiveness in the creation of this game.

DAPY, founded by Pierre-Yves and Francis Azuelos in 1980, was a pioneer in the production of Plexiglas fashion accessories for major French and international fashion houses.

Magnificent set of chess pieces from 1974, produced by Pitkin County toy to reproduce Josef Hartwig’s famous 1923 chess. The pieces are made of wood, with the light side showing its natural coloration and the dark side ebonized. The king measures 5.5 cm with a base of 3.4 cm. The pawns measure 2.1 cm. A particularly interesting and original chess set. I’ve never had or seen one so large or so sophisticated. This set is made entirely of leather. The king is 15 cm high and the leather board is 63 x 63 cm. The chess set has been signed and dated by the artist who made it. On the back of the board, he also left a tribute and thanks to the person to whom he offered the set. The set is in very good condition, nothing to declare apart from a few minor imperfections and wear marks here and there.

The pieces have been designed with great originality: their bodies are made from leather cups, they have hair made from leather thongs and very elaborate faces with eyes, mouths, noses and ears represented by intricate cut-outs in the leather. There are many well-thought-out details in the design of these pieces: the horses’ harnesses are made with buckled straps, the king’s and queen’s teeth are made with a thin layer of leather left hanging in their mouths, the cravats of the bishops, the tongues at the end of the horses’ snouts.

The game was made with great talent, and an enormous amount of time and work went into it. This kind of game is far too costly in terms of time and materials to be marketed. This one was a gift for a close friend of the artist.
